A letter from Elakha Alliance's Executive Director:
Dear Elakha Alliance Friends and Supporters,
Over the past week I have taken some time to think about what the outcome of the recent election means for the Elakha Alliance and our mission to bring sea otters back to Oregon. While the political landscape over the upcoming four years will likely make our work more challenging, this is not a time to despair. The Elakha Alliance has always been focused on the long game – we know that restoring wildlife and protecting our marine environment is a slow and steady process that we will continue to pursue.
While the political reality within which we work is uncertain and subject to change, our resolve to return sea otters to Oregon and ensure we have a healthy and resilient coast remains firm. The Elakha Alliance’s first two years of work coincided with the previous Trump administration, and yet we were still able to build a robust organization and make progress on our mission. We certainly need to be mindful of how a new political climate may impact our work, and we will adjust our strategies accordingly.
The Elakha Alliance is well positioned to ride through rough political waves with a committed staff, a strategic work plan, and support from partners and people like you. So my message here is one of hope and resolve. It took decades and many Administrations and changes in Congressional leadership to return condors to the skies of Arizona and California, remove four dams from the Klamath River so salmon could return, and return wolves across the Western US. And just as relevant, it took decades for Indian people to regain recognition and rights from the federal government. So we will persevere towards achieving our vision – a future with sea otters on the Oregon coast.
